Bringing Light to Rural Communities
The Alliance for Mindanao Off-grid Renewable Energy Program installed its first solar photovoltaic lighting system in the community center and the streets of the remote island barangay of Pababag in Bongao, Tawi-Tawi in August 2002. At the same time, three 300-wattpeak battery charging stations began to serve the energy needs of thirty households by charging up 80 to 100-ampere hours (Ah) battery that could power two compact fluorescent lamps and in some instances, a radio or a black & white television set for each household.
The AMORE Program is a rural electrification alliance between the United States Agency for International Development, the Philippine Department of Energy, private energy partners and the Autonomous Region of Muslim Mindanao. It is administered by Winrock International.
