Growers provided with marketing support by USAID in Impasugong, Bukidnon Province, sort cabbages destined for institutional buyers in Cebu. With support from USAID, Dumingag, a small, rural municipality in Zamboanga del Sur, mounted a tax information campaign to improve its local revenue streams. Students from the Notre Dame Village Elementary School in Cotabato City have fun with science reference books acquired by their parent-teacher association with the help of an education matching grant provided by USAID. Students at Banisil Elementary School in Tambler, General Santos City, sharpen their reading skills using computer and library resources provided through a partnership between the school’s parent-teacher association and USAID. A 48-meter suspension footbridge built by USAID in Munai, Lanao del Norte Province, provides safe pedestrian access across the Liangan River for the area’s farmers and other residents. USAID has helped more than 12,000 former combatants of the Moro National Liberation Front earn a living as fruit, vegetable and aquaculture growers.
Helped by marketing and production training provided by USAID, the Tupi Balangon Farmer’s Association, a farming cooperative in Tupi, South Cotabato Province, is able to export its organically-grown bananas. After a concrete footbridge was built by USAID across the Sampao River in Sultan Kudarat Province, crossing became much safer and more efficient for residents needing access to markets and services in Isulan town. The 1.5-meter concrete footbridge built by USAID across flood-prone Bulanit creek in Labangan, Zamboanga del Sur Province, provides some 2,500 residents with easier and safer access to markets, schools and government services. The Mangilala Bridge built in Isulan, Sultan Kudarat Province, replaced an old wooden plank bridge that could not accommodate heavy trucks carrying produce from local farms to market centers. This trading center built by USAID in Barangay Diplo, Kumalarang, Zamboanga del Sur, has helped increase commercial activity in the area. Western Mindanao State University students in Zamboanga City develop the English language skills they need for gainful employment in key industries with the help of a speech laboratory provided by USAID.
This 45-meter footbridge built by USAID benefits more than 5,500 residents in Bgy. Balimbing, Panglima Sugala, Tawi-Tawi Province, by providing them with safer and quicker access to markets, schools and services. The railings and sturdy concrete steps of the Malinao boat landing built by USAID in Mabuhay, Zamboanga Sibugay Province, provide safety for disembarking passengers. Communal water faucets built by USAID help ensure a steady supply of clean water to residents in Bgy. Inug-ug, Pikit, North Cotabato Province. This boat landing in Sitio Guicam has made it easier for the 2,300 residents of Dawa Dawa, Zamboanga Sibugay, to transport passengers and cargo, leading to increased commercial activity in the area. USAID assists Mindanao-based firms to participate in Hong Kong’s Food Expo and reach new international markets. USAID provides former combatants of the Moro National Liberation Front in Lantawan, Basilan, with hatchery-bred finfish juveniles to enable them to increase their livelihood incomes through sustainable fish farming, while helping to conserve juvenile stocks in the wild.
USAID assisted Dumingag, a small, third-class municipality in Zamboanga del Sur to boost its local revenue collection by 276 percent. USAID has provided more than 900 schools in Mindanao’s conflict-affected areas with internet-connected computers and IT peripheral and training. Members of the Tupi Balangon Farmer’s Association who were trained in good agricultural practices by USAID, sort and pack organically-grown bananas for export at their farm in Tupi, South Cotabato Province. USAID built Busay Bridge in Isabela City, Basilan Province, to provide residents with faster and safer access to markets, schools and social services. USAID installed an elevated water tank with a 1,800-meter distribution pipeline and 11 communal faucets, which provides safe drinking water to more than 2,800 residents in Barangay Bulucaon, North Cotabato.

Photo by: GEM In her remarks, USAID Director Steele highlighted the strong partnership between the governments of the Philippines and the United States and their joint efforts to bring sustainable economic growth to the conflict affected areas of Mindanao. “This is a very important event for us. We want to showcase the partnership between the U.S and Philippine Government s in trying to achieve the goal of generating incomes for people, especially in Mindanao,” Director Steele said. USAID’s Growth with Equity in Mindanao (GEM) Program has built 350 solar dryers, including a grains dryer in Alamada, North Cotabato.  The purpose of this project is to reduce losses due to the inadequate drying of crops, and to enable farmers to earn more. USAID’s Growth with Equity in Mindanao (GEM) Program has assisted more than 1,200 former Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF) combatants in 33 communities in the Sulu Archipelago to produce and sell higher-value mariculture products, in order to earn a better living for their families. USAID’s Growth with Equity in Mindanao (GEM) Program has improved irrigation services in Barangay Orok, Surigao City through the construction of a kilometer-long communal irrigation system upgrade.  This project has contributed to the overall economic development of the farming community. USAID’s Growth with Equity in Mindanao (GEM) Program has completed more than 1,230 community infrastructure projects to help generate economic activity, including 226 Barangay bridges like this one in Barangay Palkan, Polomolok, South Cobatabo. The extension and upgrading of the  airport runway in remote Tawi-Tawi Province by USAID’s Growth with Equity in Mindanao (GEM) Program led to new commercial flight routes, generating economic activity in the province. Companies assisted by USAID’s Growth with Equity in Mindanao (GEM) Program were able to join local and international trade shows, such as Seoul Food and Hotel 2011, in order to increase higher-value agricultural exports and help generate more livelihood opportunities in Mindanao.  Participants have reported sales of more than $38 million resulting from their participation.
A pedestrian footbridge and stair landing completed in Taluksangay, Zamboanga City, by USAID’s Growth with Equity in Mindanao (GEM) Program provides safe and efficient access to the city’s commercial centers for this coastal community of Tausug, Yakan, and Samal families.
