IMPROVE MANAGEMENT OF SOLID WASTES

photo of recyclable solid wastes

Local governments consider the task of properly disposing the growing piles of trash as one of their top priorities. In fact, many local governments allocate 40% of their total budget for managing solid waste. USAID is helping local governments deliver this essential service more efficiently through greater transparency and accountability in contracting for solid waste management services. In particular, activities encourage local governments to shift from the traditional collection and dumping of solid waste to contracts that require the contractor to promote segregation, recycling and composting. These contracts may include bonuses and other economic incentives if the contractor increases the volume of materials being recycled and composted.
