Local Leaders in Sulu Support Mothers' Safe Deliveries
USAID trained 57 midwives in Sulu to implement a community-managed intervention package to help decrease maternal and infant deaths in the province. The trained midwives tap community volunteers who serve as birthing partners and encourage more mothers and women to seek prenatal and postpartum services. Through advocacy of USAID-trained midwives in Talipao municipality in Sulu, Mayor Sitti Raya Tulawie renovated a birthing space in the Talipao Health Center and allocated more than $100 a month to purchase life-saving supplies for mothers. The supplies would help prevent excessive bleeding and infection during deliveries, the primary causes of maternal deaths.
