Lanao School Receives New Appliances for Home Economics Classroom

Students of the Bansayan Elementary School in Poona-Bayabao, Lanao del Sur, received a new cooking range and sewing machine for their home economics classroom which was established by the parent-teacher association (PTA), with support from USAID’s Growth with Equity in Mindanao (GEM) Program. Under its Education Matching Grant project, GEM matches - peso for peso - funds raised by PTAs of schools in conflict-affected areas. PTAs have used the Education Matching Grants to establish mini-libraries, science laboratories, multi-media centers, home economics classrooms and other education facilities in their schools. Thus far, Education Matching Grants have been provided to a total of 787 Mindanao schools, benefiting more than 400,000 students. Since the inception of the Education Matching Grant project, PTAs have raised approximately $860,000 to improve local programs and facilities, and USAID has matched this amount. GEM expects to award up to 800 additional Education Matching Grants over the next three years.
